Melo Productions is a very recognizable name in Vancouver, well known for its legendary concerts featuring many distinguished performers, many of whom are from the Caribbean. What is your connection to the Caribbean?
I was born in the Caribbean, on the Island of St. Kitts & Nevis and I moved to Canada in 1964. I have had an interest in the Entertainment business since I was in High School at Eric Hamber in Vancouver, B.C. I worked at local Vancouver night clubs in the 70’s and 80’s; such as Sugar Daddy’s, Oil Can Harry’s, The Cave and Baceda’s Night Club to pay my way through University.
Mel Warner is also a recognizable name, as you host “Caribbean Sounds” on Co-op Radio 100.5 FM. Tell us about that radio program. “Caribbean Sounds started back in the 70’s. I was contacted by persons in the Industry, to consider creating and hosting a Caribbean Program in Vancouver and so “Caribbean Sounds” was born. In doing so, we brought the Caribbean to Canada. Over the years, we have interviewed many Caribbean Artist’s; such as Byron Lee, Beenie Man, Jimmy Cliff, Shaggy, Maxi Priest, Freddie McGregor, Ellie Matt & The G. I’S Brass, just to name a few. We also bring news out of the Caribbean and specialize in all types of music; Soca Calypso, Reggae, Zouk, Ska, Latin, Dancehall and list goes on. “Caribbean Sounds”, on Vancouver Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM is on every Saturday evening from 8:30pm to 11:00pm. Thirty years and still going strong!
