Emancipation Garden, St. Thomas
Featuring occasional band concerts and benches, a gazebo and lots of
shade, the Emancipation Garden on St. Thomas is where, on the July 3,
1848 the proclamation was read, freeing all slaves on the island. A bust
of King Christian V resides in this commorative garden plus a replica of
the Philadelphia Liberty Bell which you’ll find in its own corner of the
garden among the trees and benches. During April the island’s carnival
month, the gardens are transformed into a carnival village. Located in
Charlotte Amalie near to the waterfront, this park is easily spotted so sit
and rest here for a while.
