Grand Turk Lighthouse and
the light keeper’s house
Grand Turk
Grand Turk is the second most populated island in the country after Providenciales. The capital,
Cockburn Town, is located here. On its 6.9 mi² (18 km²), 4,831 (2012 Census) call it home. Its
most famous landmark is a lighthouse, built in 1852. No longer operational, it is now a tourist
attraction.
The Turks and Caicos National Museum is also located on Grand Turk. You will find it on historic
Front Street, whose architecture reflects the island’s British-Bermudian heritage. There’s a
wealth of fascinating displays here, including a 500-800 year-old Lucayan duho, (a ceremonial
chair), and artefacts from the Molasses Reef Wreck, which was the oldest European shipwreck
excavated in the Western Hemisphere.
Columbus Landfall National Park is located on the western coast of the island where it is
believed Christopher Columbus first made landfall in the New World. There are also many
beautiful beaches on this side of the island, such as Cockburn Town Beach and Governor’s
Beach.
