Both amateur and professional divers will enjoy scuba diving in the waters of St. Kitts. For those
interested in wreck diving, it is believed that over 400 ships have sunk in the surrounding waters
but less than 20 have been discovered to date. This presents a splendid opportunity to explore.
One of the more popular wrecks is the River Taw, which sunk in 1985.
Divers can head to the reefs which has depths ranging from 35 to 95 feet with lobsters and reef
fish lurking in its depths. Diving in the caves off Nevis will also be an exhilarating experience.
The well-known hymn, “Amazing Grace” was born on the island of St. Kitts. The author,
John Newton was a slave trader and captain of a slave ship that landed at Sandy Point,
St. Kitts. After a near-death experience he became a Christian and lent his voice towards
the abolition of slavery. Today, a museum, located at Sandy Point, is dedicated to him
and sheds light on the history of that much-loved song.
They are open open Monday - Friday, 10.30 am - 4:00 pm. Admission is $5 US for visitors
and $5 Eastern Caribbean dollars for locals.
