Before 1930, there were no roads capable of accommodating vehicular traffic
on Saba so there were no motor vehicles on the island. It was initially thought
that building a road would be too difficult due to its mountainous terrain. A
local Saban, however, decided to defy the odds and in 1938, he started road
construction. The first motor vehicle arrived in Saba in 1974.
