Museo Nueva Cádiz (Nueva Cádiz Library Museum)
Museo Nueva Cádiz takes its name from the first Spanish town in South America which was
established on Isla Cubagua, south of Margarita around 1500. The town was later completely
destroyed by an earthquake in 1541 but exhibits in the museum show artifacts from that
period and throughout the region’s history since.
Castillo San Carlos
de Borromeo
Although the 800kgs front
door to Castillo San Carlos
de Borromeo may only be
a replica of the original, it is
still impressive. Pampatar’s
fort is located on the
waterfront in the center of
town. Built between 1663
and 1684, it was constructed
on top of the site of an
earlier fort which had been
destroyed by European
pirates. The fort offers a
classic example of Spanish
architecture and is the best
preserved fort on the island.
