St. Georges
St. Georges Island, which is the oldest continuously English inhabited settlement in the western
hemisphere, was first settled when the English ship, Sea Venture, ran aground there in 1609. Visitors
to the town today can wander along the maze of narrow streets with names like Featherbed Alley and
Old Maid’s Lane or visit several museums to learn of the island’s history.
