St. George’s Island Forts Although Bermuda is located in a strategic position in the Atlantic, the first British settlement, St. George Town and Island, were vulnerable so a series of forts were built for its defense. These forts which were built between 1600 and 1840 have now been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Fort St. Catherine is often popular with visitors as it has memorabilia depicting the island’s history, a collection of arms and replicas of the British Crown Jewels.
