Synagogue Path A magnificent synagogue was built in 1737 by the 100 Jews who lived on the island. The synagogue, Honen Dalim (she who is charitable to the poor), was built in the capital city of Oranjestadt, and the path beside it is aptly named, Synagogue Path. St. Eustatius was first seen by Christopher Columbus in 1493. It changed hands twenty-two times but since 1816 has remained a Dutch colony. It was an important, wealthy island under the Dutch and because of its wealth, was known as “The Golden Rock” As St. Eustatius is relatively small with a population of less than 4,000, there isn’t a long list of usual tourist attractions, but the capital, Oranjestad, and the island’s natural beauty, provides interesting opportunities for most visitors to explore.
