most beautiful garden I have ever seen. We pop
in there too for breakfast - expensive, but well
worth it and their Egg Benedictine is lush. Monkeys are everywhere too. There are so many
fruit trees especially mangoes, the monley can
all survive happily.
There are wild donkeys everywhere on Nevis.
During slavery, donkeys were used on the
plantations. Now, most of them live on the side
of the island where there are less houses and
they can roam freely. There, you’ll also find the
ruins of sugar mills and plantation houses too.
One large stone house, now a ruin, is rumored
to have a resident ghost of a lady, often heard
crying. The story goes, she was the wife of a
plantation owner, and was having an affair. Her
husband killed her lover and she died broken
hearted. I often ask my husband if we could sit in
the ruin in the wee hours of the night and wait
to hear the ghost! But he is too afraid to go. If you’re as lucky as I was, my husband’s friend
can climb to the top of a coconut tree and cut
down the coconuts…nothing tastes better than
fresh coconut water…even when mixed with
rum! There are so many fruits to try, many were
completely new to me.
Don’t drive too fast on Nevis - goats and sheep
roam freely everywhere, as well as the donkeys.
People often take a hike up the to the top of
the mountain, Nevis Peak. I recommend you
take a guide, who, for a small fee, will take you
to the top. I did it once with Ritchie from the
‘Hermitage”.There is a plastic box at the top with
a book inside where you can write a comment.
Go early and take plenty of water, I have heard
of people who leave too late in the day and get
stuck overnight in the dense woodland…not a
good place to be when the mosquitoes are out!
