El Yaque The strong winds and shallow waters of El Yaque Beach, located 5 minutes from the airport, make this a popular destination for families and those who like windsurfing, or kiting. From the dock, kids can jump into the shallow waters or catch a banana boat whilst windsurfers enjoy the all year round strong winds that have made this spot one of the world’s favourites for the sport, attracting worldwide visitors. It has an interesting history. It was from here that 15,000 men left to stop the insurrection in Venezuela in 1815 and the wreck of San Pedro de Alcantara lies testament to that just beneath the nearby waters. On the island, all development has been undertaken with respect to nature and many tourists today explore the island’s beaches and cliffs by way of a bicycle tour. Perhaps the most popular experience for tourists is to sit on a cannon at the Fortin de La Galera (Fort) and watch the sunset although the fort does also offer other great views of the Bay all day long.
