St. George’s was once a very important
place. In the mid-1880’s it became the
capital of the colony of the British Windward
Islands following the withdrawal of
Barbados from this prestigious position.
St. Georges is the home of the world-
famous Grand Anse Beach, the St. George’s
University School of Medicine and the
Maurice Bishop International Airport.
Divers will also find St. George’s interesting.
In 1981, the “Bianca C”, an Italian cruise
liner caught fire and sank 3 miles from the
St. George’s harbour. Today the sunken
vessel is an impressive diving site. A bronze
statue, “Christ of the Deep”, was given to the
people of Grenada by the Costa Line, owners
of Bianca C, in appreciation of their help
with the rescue the 600 member crew. It
stands protectively surveying the beautiful
Carenage at the St. George’s Harbour.
A replica statue lies in the underwater
sculpture park located just outside the
capital in the Molinere Bay.
