The Abacos
Visitors to The Abacos look forward to participating in water-based activities of which
there are many. One of the main things that attract people to the island is fishing.
Throughout The Abacos, be it in Marsh Harbour, Treasure Cay or any of the other cays,
fishermen arrive during the summer months to participate in fishing tournaments.
Marlin, sailfish, bonefish and tuna are common catches.
Diving and snorkeling too are popular activities because of the big reefs with exciting
swim-through caves where divers are usually treated to the sight of reef sharks, and
many schools of silver bait fish.
The number one activity by far, however, is boating and sailing. The Abacos is considered
to be one of the top boating destinations in the Caribbean/Atlantic basin. Its sheltered
harbours, many cays and top-notch marine facilities, attract many regattas, especially in
spring and summer. The United States being its close neighbour also makes The Abacos
an attractive sailing destination.
