Saba is the smallest
special municipality of
the Netherlands.
In 1493 the island
was sighted
by Christopher
Columbus.
Get Married on Saba
In 1632 English
sailors, shipwrecked,
landed on Saba.
In 1640, the Dutch
West Indian Company
brought people over
to Saba in order to
colonize the island.
They were already
settled on the
neighbouring island
of St. Eustatius.
Conflict between
Britain and The
Netherlands resulted
in the Dutch being
chased off the island
by the British pirate,
Henry Morgan.
For the next 200
years, the island was
controlled at various
times by the Dutch,
Spanish, French and
English.
In 1816, the Dutch
won control and
the island remains a
municipality of The
Netherlands today.
As a Special Municipality of The Netherlands, same sex
