St. Louis
Cathedral
Towering above the
neighbouring buildings in
the heart of Fort-de-France,
this Cathedral with its 187
foot steeple, cannot be
ignored. Its Gothic Revival
style beckons from afar and
visitors are inevitably drawn
to it. Since 1657, six other
churches once stood on this
location but were destroyed
either by hurricane,
earthquake or fire. When
this Cathedral was built in
1895, metal frames were
used to protect it against
any natural disaster that
may occur.
The walls of the Cathedral’s
interior is lined with
colourful stained glass
windows. During the
weekend masses, the
Cathedral’s pipe organ
reverently resonates
throughout the church, its
solemn notes spilling out
into the streets, melodically
tugging at passersby to
come in to worship.
