S
ince 1972, Tumba has been the local rhythm of Curacao Carnival. It is also the music of Aruba
and Bonaire. The music of Tumba has been developing from the change of last century and
is part of the islands history being a combination of its Dutch and African heritage. The four
major instruments of Tumba music are the Timbales, Conga, Campana (the cow bell) and Guiro.
The Tumba Festival is an important aspect of Curacao Carnival. A Tumba King or Queen is crowned
and their winning piece becomes the selected song for that Carnival season. Overall,
it is a great event with good music and a happy crowd.
The Tumba King 2018 was Urvin Jano with “Sende lus pa Korsou”.
