Rhone National Marine Park
Just off the BVI’s Salt Island lies the 800 acre Rhone Island Marine Park. Within the park
lies the Royal Mail Steamer wreck which sank in 1867 during a hurricane. Sadly, 125
people perished that day. The marine park stretches from Lee Bay on Salt Island across
to Dead Chest Island.
The 310’ x 40’ Wreck of the Rhone lies in two parts in depths ranging between 30 to 90
feet. The ship’s anchor broke away and lies outside Great Harbour, Peter Island and the
second section of the ship lies in Lee Bay.
