Slave Huts, Kralendijk Scattered along the island’s coast, you will see the slave huts that were built in 1850 to accommodate slaves working in the salt fields who, as a result, were required to live away from their families. Today, plaques displaying information about that period have been placed on the huts so visitors can take self-guided tours and learn of the inhumane conditions that prevailed on the island for some the slave labourers during that sad era. PlaceS of Interest Mangrove Information Center Mangrove plays an important role in Bonaire’s ecosystem and you can learn all about this by visiting their Mangrove Information Center. Established in 2002, the center offers two very informative tours where placards describing the role of each plant are displayed.
