Fort Hamilton
Bermuda’s
Forts
With Bermuda’s close proximity to the United
States’ east coast and being a British Overseas
Territory, England was able to make use of
this island’s strategic location to its advantage.
Bermuda was an important naval base,
and served the British ships well during the
American Civil War. The remains of many forts
still dot the Bermudian landscape. Some have
been restored to a certain extent, while others
lie in ruins.

Fort St. Catherine
Fort St. Catherine is home to an impressive display of antique weaponry which includes
swords, muskets and pistols from an active war-time era. Originally built in 1614 this fort,
the largest on the island, underwent several renovations in the 19th century. As you look
at its ramparts, you will be able to appreciate how intimidating a presence it once posed to
approaching enemies.
