PLACES OF INTEREST COURLAND MONUMENT, PLYMOUTH The first settlers on Tobago were sent by the Duke of Courland in 1654 (Courland is a region in western Latvia) and they settled in what is now known as Plymouth. The first settlers suffered from various diseases and continued attacks from the natives. They eventually abandoned the island during the squabbles for possession by the Dutch, British and French. To commemorate these first settlers, in 1978, the Latvian- American artist Janis Mintiks created a monument which now stands on the site of that first settlement. Photo Credit: TripAdvisor
