New River Estate Built in the 18th century when sugar was the mainstay of the island, the New River Plantation was abuzz with sugar production and its windmills, copper kettles, steam engine, other sugar-producing equipment and great house all lay majestic on the eastern side of the island. Today, its ruins still lie resplendent, elegantly reminiscent of its glory days when Nevis boasted of being the main sugar producing island in the Caribbean. Its remnants tell a proud story.
