San Filipe Fort The Fort of San Felipe, located in Puerto Plata, was built in 1564 as a defence against pirates. Now a museum, it is a well preserved representation of colonial military architecture, housing a collection of antique weapons and military supplies from the 18th & 19th centuries. Upon entry, you will be given headphones to listen to the commentary of the Fort’s history as a guided tour proceeds. Although it is small, the fort is well worth the visit, not only for the historical insights, but also for its amazing views and beautiful grounds. You’ll find here a well-preserved piece of Dominican history with a lot of photo ops to complete its attraction.
