he Dominican
Republic comes alive
each year during the
months of January and
February. It’s carnival time!
Bright colours punctuate the
festivities and the costumed
“Diablo Cojuelo” (the devil),
with its bells, mirrors and
rattles is the central charcater.
The festival also include
masqueraders with elaborate
masks and big horns. And
of course, there’s music -
infectious, pulsating music!
Here is a snippet of what you
can expect in some of the cities
during the carnival celebrations:
Santo Domingo. George
Washingon Avenue is the place
to be to watch the Carnival
Parade.
La Vega is the home of the
oldest carnival in the country
and probably, the most popular.

Montecristi. The carnival here
begins in the city cemetery.
Azua. Historical aspects of the
country are included in this
carnival, which is another one of
the oldest in the country.
Salcedo. Crepe paper is
most commonly used on the
costumes in this carnival which
consists of different characters.
Puerto Plata. Taino culture
takes center stage at this
carnival where snails and
African symbolism are used.
Punta Cana. Since 2008, the
country’s folklore has been
reflected in this carnival
celebration.
