About Shanika I am an artist at heart and fashion is my favorite medium . I also love to create mini mixed media low relief sculptures which will soon be available on my website . I am an environmental activist through every aspect of my life and aim to live the sustainable lifestyle which is portrayed by my brand . I ’ m a passionate lover of nature and it is often the greatest inspiration in my creative process . I am a proud mother of an amazing 5 year old boy who fills me with so much love , I can burst . From my experience , family is the cornerstone of success and I owe much of mine to the support and love my family has given to me on my journey . I ’ m a perfectionist . I don ’ t believe in taking shortcuts . Diligence and attention to detail are what separates excellence from mediocrity and these have been the guiding factors for me throughout my life .
The Beginning of the Fashion Journey
My fashion journey started from conception . It was always there , through nature or nurture or both . My mother bought me my first sewing machine as a little girl . It was a toy but it worked well enough to sew clothes for my dolls . At secondary school I made outfits for myself and friends to go out and I even made our school uniforms in our last years there . I started designing more seriously and invested everything I had into my first collection which I showcased at Caribbean Fashion Week in Jamaica . I have never looked back and I see growth as a designer and entrepreneur from year to year .

SHAKAD is a Caribbean inspired eco fashion brand . Our aesthetic is effortless exotic elegance and our lines include luxury resort and couture evening wear . The brand showcases the incorporation of modern concepts with ancient textile techniques and unusual materials to exhibit the exotic colours , textures and rhythm of the Caribbean and its people . Shakad uses blends of quality 100 % natural fibres and each garment is individually hand-dyed using the safest dying products available on the market .
