Bonaire ’ s Donkey Sanctuary offers shelter to the island ’ s donkeys . Its volunteers respond to reports of sick or wounded donkeys and the animals are brought into the Sanctuary and nursed back to health . Orphaned donkeys are also raised there and all donkeys rescued continue to live in the sanctuary and receive care from Marina Melis and her husband Ed Koopman , the founders of the Sanctuary , and their volunteers .
Visitors are welcomed to tour the Sanctuary by car , scooter , bike or on foot . You can buy carrots from the shop on site to feed the donkeys which will greet you as you tour the park . Before you leave , be sure to purchase a souvenir from the shop . Profits are used to continue caring for the animals .
