Bahamian culture can be experienced every
Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m., Coal Harbour Villas,
Nassau. Local artistes entertain patrons with
traditional performances that are closely tied
the island’s history. Limbo and Fire Dancing
plus Rake ‘n Scrape music are usually on the
itinerary.
Rake and Scrape (pronounced “rake-n-scrape”)
is a genre of music which is very unique
and native to the Bahamas. It originated
from Bahamian Cat Island and consists of a
melodious collaboration of the beating of a
goat skim drum along with the playing of a
harmonica and the scraping of a hand saw
with a metal object. Due to its uniqueness,
Rake n’ Scrape music is difficult to authentically
replicate. The uncommon nature of this type
of music has attracted the attention of many
around the world, including the Smithsonian
Institute in Washington D.C., and it is often
featured in Bahamian tourist publications.
Rake n’ Scrape is usually performed at
Bahamian cultural events such “Fish Fry” and
“Regatta”.
A popular Rake n’ Scrape band in the Bahamas
is “Lassie Doe and the Boys” .
