West Caicos
The second largest uninhabited island of the Turks & Caicos, West Caicos’ eleven square
miles is a popular venue for picnics. The waters around the island provide great diving
experiences and this location is included on the itinerary of many of the islands’ dive
operators. Protected by the West Caicos Marine National Park, this area contains some of
the top dive sites of the Turks & Caicos, with excellent snorkeling, and interesting geology.
Lake Catherine, a large saline lake lies in the center of West Caicos, home to a large number
of bird and aquatic wildlife.
Ruins and old railroad tracks are reminders that West Caicos once had a civilization calling
it home. The ruins of Yankee Town, a late 19th century abandoned and ruined settlement
also remains.
