Chacachacare Island A 900 acre island between Trinidad and Venezuela, Chacachacare receives many visitors who come here by boat to picnic, camp, hike, swim in its two beaches and explore. This uninhabited island was once a leper colony, set up by Dominican nuns. It has a salt pond, a lighthouse and abandoned buildings - chapel, hospital, convent, cemetery and some residences. From the lighthouse you can easily see the mainland of Venezuela. Some visitors describe the island as eerie while others describe it as a gem and a great camping location. Regardless of the stories told and the individual experiences, all agree it is an island worth visiting. Photo Credit: Roger J. Photo Credit: Avion C. Photo Credit: Roger J.
