Bloody Point Canyon Spooner’s Ginnery Image Source: stchristophernationaltrust.kn The Spooner Ginnery, which is now government owned, is an impressive refl ection of the island’s history and heritage. It was once a sugar mill, then in 1901, due to sugar becoming less profi table, the owners at that time converted it to a cotton ginnery and it remained in operation until the 1970’s. It is now being restored as a heritage attraction with museum, restaurant and shops. One mile west of Basseterre is a site known as Bloody Point where, in 1626, the combined forces of the French and British massacred 2,000 Carib Indians. Today, the point is marked by a plaque. A short short distance from the point is a headland which aff ords some great photo opportunities with views of the nearby islands of Saba and St Eustatius. There is also a trail here which will take you to a canyon whose walls are lined with petroglyphs.
