This church is located in the village
of Liberta and is the oldest Anglican
church on the island, built between
1824 and 1842, originally for use
as a school. The village of Liberta
is of historical signifi cance on the
island. Formerly a plantation village,
when the plantation owner could
no longer sustain it due to fi nancial
hardships, the now-freed slaves
purchased small portions of it,
built their houses on the land and
established their village. Liberta,
indicating the liberty of the slaves
was the name given to the village in
1835 and the name remains today.
