Runaway Ghaut
On Montserrat a Ghaut, pronounced Gut, is a deep ravine which carries rainwater from the high hills of
the island down to the sea. Although the island has many of these ghauts, one has become a popular
attraction with visitors. Known as the Runaway Ghaut, this ravine is surrounded by tall tropical trees
and is the site of a French invasion that was aimed at capturing slaves. It was also used as an escape
route for the French after they lost the battle. A local legend says visitors who drink from the spring
water in the ravine is destined to return to Montserrat.
