Green Castle Hill PLACES OF INTEREST Christian Valley Agricultural Station Green Castle Hill is located 3 miles south of St. John’s and experienced hikers usually make the trek uphill. At an elevation of 565 feet above sea level, it is one of the highest points on the island and provides scenic views from the top. It is also of historical signifi cance. This hill has been a place for spiritual worship by the Amerindians and it is believed the rock formations were actually done by them as part of their ceremonies. Green Hill also served as the burial site for a colonial governor, Lord Baldwin, who loved the Hill’s natural beauty and so was buried here. Although today the Christian Valley Agricultural Station is home to the island’s premier fruit trees, its history is more well-known as being the area where, in the 17th and 18th centuries, escaped African slaves could fi nd refuge. Known as maroons, these slaves created a network of trails throughout the surrounding forests, many of which are still in use today. Photo Credit: Mount Anu Foundation
