Plymouth: The Pompeii of the Caribbean PLACES OF INTEREST Montserrat National Museum Once one of the prettiest capitals in the Caribbean with its mix of Georgian and Victorian mansions, in the 1990s Plymouth experienced the same fate as the now famous Pompeii of Roman times, as it too was overwhelmed by an erupting volcano. Today, visitors to the island can visit the buried city and observe the volcano’s destructive powers in the ruins left behind. Having had to be moved from its prior home in Montserrat’s old capital due to the volcano, the Montserrat National Museum was re-located to Little Bay. Exhibits in the museum include Amerindian artefacts and insights into the British colonial period and the days of slavery. A lot can also be learned about the island’s culture in the books and craft items you’ll fi nd here. Souvenirs can also be purchased. Photo Credit: Montserrat National Trust
