Mega D
Dion Humphreys
M
ega D was born as Dion Delvin
Humphreys on the island of
St. Maarten. He moved back
to St.Eustatius with his mother
after his parents separated. He is the second of five
children. In 2000, Mega D participated in the annual
Caribbean Gospel Festival in the Reggae/ Rap
category and took home the prize for best
performance, which immediately made him the
highlight on many TV shows, school shows and
delegation events.
Growing up, he was an adventurous, mischievous
young boy with a huge passion for music, mainly
dancehall and reggae. As a result, he avidly
participated in talent shows and open-events to
expose his craft. His was a religious home with his
family being regular church-goers and members
of the Seventh-Day Adventist church. His love for
reggae and dancehall music, therefore, made him
the black sheep of the family. Gospel was the only
accepted music at his house. In 2001, Mega D moved to Europe to pursue his
career. He was soon appearing at various dancehall
shows and hip-hop festivals. After one year, he was
sharing stage shows with international entertainers
such as TOK, Wayne Wonder, Capelton, Mr.
Vegas, Sizzla, and Elephant Man just to name
a few. He was asked to start Sean Paul’s sold out
concert in 2003, where he released his first featured
single ‘’Sometimes’’ together with a well-known DJ
Crew, Party Squad, which made the top 10 in the
European chart within the week.
Skipping classes to be with his friends and his
passionate love for that genre of music aroused the
ire of his mother, who did not consider this to be
the best environment for her son. At school, Dion
was the entertainer and class clown, unabashedly
being the one at the forefront when brave acts were
committed and he was, of course, the liveliest of
characters. The spotlight always belonged to him!
Regardless of the family’s dislike of his music
choices, Dion was determined to make his Mom and
siblings proud, be it through music or wherever his
life dreams would take him.
His success continued. But after his solo tour in
West Africa, Mega D took a minute to concentrate
on where his career was heading. With the sudden
death of his close friend came the realization that
his life was not at the standards he needed it to be.
He then decided to take a break and re-focus.
In 2010 Dion started the Mega D Youth Foundation
on Statia. His new life commitment is now centered
on positively affecting the lives of youths and being
a voice for causes such as domestic violence. His
passion for cooking and interior designing has also
re-awakened.
