Before the arrival of
the Europeans in
1493, St. Kitts was
called “Liamuiga” by
the Kalinago people
(The Caribs) who
migrated to the island
from south America.
They forced out the
previous occupants,
the Arawaks, who
moved to other islands
in the north. Today,
petroglyphs serve as a
reminder of the islands’
first inhabitants, the
Caribs and Arawaks.
