PLACES OF INTEREST
St. Kitts, like many other Caribbean Islands, has a mixed colonial history but perhaps in no other island is it as
obvious as it is with St. Kitts. The capital Basseterre was named by the French and means lower ground, and
other main areas of the town were named by the British, such as The Circus named after Piccadilly Circus and
the old slave market being called Pall Mall. There are many areas of interest to explore.
Mount
Liamuiga and
Black Rocks
Mount Liamuiga is the
name of the island’s
dormant volcano. A hike
to its crater at a height of
1155m will take about
2 hours with another
2 hours to hike down.
The hike, which starts
at the Belmont Estate, is
not for the weak as it is
steep in places but for
those that do opt for the
challenge, they will be
rewarded with fine views
of the neighbouring
islands and the sight of
some dramatic cliffs at
Black Rocks which were
created by the erupting
volcano.
