MYTHS OF BREAST AUGMENTATION (PART II) 8. A surgeon really does not need any surgical experience to determine and definitively state which techniques or implants are bad, which techniques work or do not, or what is possible or not. You should only trust a surgeon’s statements if he or she has the experience necessary to back the claim. 9. Most patient morbidity, complications, and reoperations are caused by the breast implant and are beyond the surgeon’s control. The rate of surgical complications from breast augmentation, including capsular contracture, is directly related to way the surgery is performed. 6. Over the past 20 years, we’ve really advanced the state of the art in breast augmentation. Most surgeons perform breast augmentation essentially the same way they did 20 years ago, with the same tools, implants and surgery time. We need to devote more time and effort into evolving the art of breast augmentation. 10. When a surgeon establishes a set of preferences of techniques and implant, by definition that is the best option, and the surgeon should rigidly defend that choice over an entire practice career. Surgeons should offer patients reliable, tested techniques, but they should recognize that “good” can always be “better”. 7. Implant shape does not matter Round or anatomically shaped breast implants? One is not necessarily better, but your surgeon should be experienced enough to be able to offer the best option for your body. 11. Whatever is easiest is best. It is not easy to provide extensive patient education or thorough tissue examinations, but in the end it is best for the patient. The outcome should exceed a patient’s expectation, and that must be the goal. John B.
