St. John Berchmans Catholic School students learned the importance of pollinators at the Feed a Bee planting event on Feb. 27 hosted by the Bayer Bee Care Program in collaboration with National 4-H Council and Extension.

More than 60 students in 2nd - 8th grade and part of St. John Berchmans Knights 4-H Club participated in rotating, educational sessions explaining what pollinators do, how bees help in farming, the role of monarch butterflies as pollinators, and beekeeping basics. 4-H'ers even helped establish a “pollinator patch” in their school garden.

Bayer Bee Care Program made a $10,000 donation to Bexar County 4-H Youth Development Program to help fund future pollinator initiatives and activities throughout the county.

Teams of 4-H and FFA members from throughout Texas applied their technical and interpersonal skills at the Agrobotics Challenge held recently at the Morris Activity Center at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo. Robots were constructed from LEGO Mindstorms kits.

David Palacios, 17, (pictured below) is a member of the 4-H Technology Team and was among this year’s participants.

“It’s a challenge to build and program the robot in time,” Palacios said. “But we learn to work together to complete the tasks and have fun doing it.”
