Urbanites, 26 in fact, joined the flock at this year's Backyard Poultry Basics presented by the Fancy Feathers 4-H Club of Hays County and received information on how to raise and care for backyard chickens. The program is part of Extension’s Backyard Basics initiative which focuses on providing consumers, backyard gardeners, homemakers, educators, and farmers “do-it-yourself” learning opportunities, such as home food preservation, gardening essentials, rainwater harvesting, raising chickens for home egg production, cooking and food safety basics. The program was free, however, donations to Fancy Feathers 4-H Club are always appreciated!

Beef Herd Rebuilding

The Beef Cattle Herd Rebuilding workshop, held on May 12 at Mark Luensmann Ranch in LaVernia, rounded up 57 producers and was a joint effort between Bexar, Guadalupe, and Wilson counties to offer a wide range of topics presented by a variety of Extension Specialists including selection and economic value of management practices (Dr. Joe Paschal), rebuilding decision tool (Mac Young), projected replacement values (Dr. Rob Hogan), brush management options and proper timing (Dr. Bob Lyons), and a chute side demonstration (Dr. Joe Paschal). The workshop also offered 2 CEUs for Licensed Private Applicators.
