Making a Comeback Title VII program fosters cultural and academic success of CMS Native American and Alaskan native students By Courtney McLaughlin Both Dancy and LaClaire say there is more to do, and more opportunities for students mean more funding. The Title VII program at CMS receives dollars based on number of students enrolled. “The more we have, the more we can do,” adds Dancy. She hopes to create a program as successful as the one in the 1970s that was later dismantled in the 1990s. “We are in our infancy,” says Dancy. “We are trying to bring back a thriving program.” A thriving program to Dancy would include implementing college readiness and job shadowing programs and hosting speakers to educate and inspire students. LaClaire hopes the future includes a student group focusing on science and engineering for Native American and Alaskan native students and increased opportunities for college and university tours and other higher education readiness initiatives. Dancy and LaClaire are proud to say the program is making strides. They continue reaching out to eligible families through mailings and phone calls.
