How to practice
advice from one of our resident dance gods, Vatsal
1.
Learn the choreography
Break choreography into blocks, what-
ever size works for you, and tackle them
one at a time before stringing them all
together. Also, try to learn the names
for steps, that way you can look them
up on YouTube or read about them
online.
2.
Practice technique
It will make dancing the style easier,
and improve your dancing if you also
practice the technique from class.
Practice things like posture, basics and
drills really slowly to get used to the
feel, and then incorporate it into the
routine.
3.
Put it together
Pick a goal for the practice session be-
forehand, rather than mindlessly prac-
ticing the routine, such as working on
your foot speed or arm styling.
Who is Vatsal?
For those of you who don’t
know, this is Vatsal. If you
are an MDS regular, you
have probably seen him
around. When he first
stumbled down to the club
in 2011, he had never
danced before, but
through years of hard
work and
practice, he now
competes in B Grade Latin
competitions, and is
ranked 22 nd in
Australia for Latin Dancing!
Other tips
Record the routine, but make sure you ask the teacher’s permission
Don’t rely too much on a routine sheet, but memorise the routine
Invest in proper dance shoes if you want to continue dancing and
learning
Feel free to ask for help, and don’t be too hard on yourself if you
don’t get something.
