The College of Arts and Sciences ( COAS ) is composed of twelve ( 12 ) academic departments : Biological Sciences , Chemistry , Computer Science , Engineering Technology , English and Foreign Languages , Family and Consumer Sciences , History , Mathematics and Physics , Music , Political Science and Public Administration , Sociology and Psychology , and Visual and Performing Arts . The College of Arts and Sciences strives to ( 1 ) provide an environment that fosters and encourages excellence in scholarship by students and faculty ; ( 2 ) prepare students for graduate and professional schools as well as for careers related to their fields of study ; ( 3 ) promote faculty research and creativity ; and ( 4 ) prepare students for living in a dynamic global society .
