Junior Cycle reforms continues . The new curriculum English has been taught by all Post Primary teachers and the first state exams in this subject t will be included in the Junior Certificate 2017 . The current impasse caused by the industrial action being taken by the ASTI Union is a serious cause of concern . Compass is participating fully through NPCpp to
Pupil Teacher Ratio ( PTR ):
Compass ’ s campaign to re-instate our schools in line with the free-schools continues . The fact that we have a limited number of schools offering ethos-based education to a diverse and widely spread population has been recognised for decades and still requires the DES funding pertaining to our minority community and schools to be catered for and accommodated differently within the education system in Ireland .
The Parent & Student Charter :
On 5th December 2016 , Minister for Education and Skills , Richard Bruton , announced that the Government have approved the draft outline of a new law , which will require every school to consult with parents and students , and publish and operate a Parent and Student Charter .
Compass , through NPCpp , has been forthright with the DES that the voice of parents must be heard in future school matters . The intention is that the Parent and Student Charter , first mooted several years ago , will be in place for the 2017 / 18 academic year .

While it is not our place to interfere in this industrial action , we have strongly demanded that our children are not effected further through any proposed action , requesting that any protest activity be carried out outside classroom hours . We have also demanded that all pupils be treated equally when it comes to marking the English examinations and that some way be found to ensure that pupils who are taught by ASTI teachers do not suffer the threatened 10 % reduction caused by ASTI instruction to the union members not to participate in the required classroom assessments . We continue to monitor this dispute closely to ensure that our children are not used as pawns in any further action .
Leaving Certificate : RACE confirms that pupils who were entitled to support for the Junior Certificate exam will automatically qualify for support in the Leaving Certificate . This has not been the case to date and , while pupils will have to apply for assistance in the LC the fact that they will not have to begin the process from scratch to qualify for assistance for the LC exams is very welcome . This Charter will require schools to fully consult and plan school matters with their ‘ customers ’ and will place parents firmly at the centre of education recognising them as the primary educators – in line with the constitution .
Ongoing consultation and submissions across all postprimary school parents are taking place and will assist towards ensuring our concerns are taken on board in this legislation .
The Parents Charter will be our key topic for the NPCpp upcoming Spring Seminar planned for Saturday 8th April . Save the date !
