carbon footprint

Not many people know what carbon footprint is and even those who do seldom give it much thought. Carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide a person produces by using fossil fuels or products that come from fossil fuels.

Let me give you a better understanding of the problem. I am sure there are things you have never thought of.

Did you know that flight from London to Hong Kong is as harmful to the environment as using 300 000 plastic bags? Even though it is by far thesafest and the fastest mode of transportation, travelling by plane is pretty much the worst thing you can do.

It may surprise you but it is actual fact that plastic is the packaging which helps you reduce your carbon footprint. Producing paper and cardboard creates about ten times more carbon dioxide than plastic bags. To help environment you must reuse the shopping bags.

And now I have a question for you. Which of these increases your carbon footprint more than the others?

a)buying a flower out of season

b)buying locally produced food

c)buying 4 kilos of imported bananas

If you say buying 4 kilos of bananas, you are wrong. Bananas are not too bad because they travel by ship and they have their own packaging. But out-of-season flowers come from hot countries and they travel by plane to stay fresh. So they increase your carbon footprint more.

Last but not least is that using a computer for 32 hours is as harmful as travelling in a plane for 4 miles. These two things produce 1 kilo of carbon dioxide. Is not it shocking? You may not travel by plane too often, but you are certain to use your computer at least 32 hours a week. Your computer produces so much carbon dioxide because it has to get energy from somewhere.
