Introducing o
St Joseph’s Home welcomed
its newest addition to the
family when the infant
and childcare centre was
officially launched in August
2017. The centre, together
with the inter-generational
playground, offers the Jurong
West community a new way
to raise our little ones as
well as to support our oldest
members. “The centre creates
a space where everyone can
find a place to co-exist - the
young, the older, the dying and
the sick. This Full Circle Care
Model is where we can learn
to embrace one another to live
in harmony,” says Sr Geraldine
Tan, Executive Director of the
home.
A childcare in a nursing home??!!
Yes! Research has shown that older adults who have regular interaction with
children report an improved sense of well-being and purpose. Children too
learn about disability and the ageing process from young thus lessening their
fear of growing older and being in the company of seniors.
That’s it?
The centre is also one way to attract back-to-work parents to join us and the
community to come visit and spend time with the seniors. Did we mention the
laughter, joy, energy, excitement, innocence and perspective that the children
can bring?
So how is this childcare centre different
from others?
A large part of the curriculum revolves around inter-generational programmes
that bring children and residents together to play, eat, do art and craft and
exercise among other things. Care is also taken to ensure the programmes
meet their cognitive, psycho-motor and social skills. The beauty of having both
childcare and nursing home under one roof is the flexibility it affords the staff to
meet regularly, plan programmes and implement them almost immediately.
