THE REAL DEAL: ATTES IN MOTION Attes aficionado: NICK TISCOE Attes moment: COLD WATER THERAPY Nick used to love the warm! Getting out of bed in the mornings was a struggle. One cold February morning, he was persuaded to take a dip in the sea, in just his swimmers, by his Jiu Jitsu coach. He is now a changed man, often found making breakfast and cleaning away the dishes before the 7.30am news bulletin. When Nick first hits the water, he can’t think about anything else. He is literally in it up to his neck and everything is going into coping with the cold. Slow it down, breathe, exhale, relax... The sun hasn’t even risen but Nick, a Jiu Jitsu instructor and owner of The Surf Club Cornwall, is already in his swimming gear getting his daily dose of cold water therapy. It’s his reset button - his Attes moment – when everything around him is forgotten and it’s just him and the great outdoors. 1, 2, 3... 30 deep breaths and Nick has got it under control. Energy, power and adrenaline pulsates through his body. Now he’s ready to take on the world! We know what you’re thinking - to throw yourself into cold water is a somewhat extreme way to set yourself up for the day but Nick isn’t your standard kind of guy. He’s the one we aspire to be. But in typically Cornish fashion, Nick doesn’t see it that way. He’s as mellow as they come (it’s the surfer in him) and has got the mental strength of a warrior (that’s the Jiu Jitsu bit). For him his Attes moment is like flipping a switch. It heals and rejuvenates the body and is the ultimate balance of opposites – we can only imagine the ecstasy of the warm shower afterwards. Attes amkan (goal): go out of your comfort zone and set yourself a personal challenge. It will dial down monotony and fire up self-confidence!
