In Conversation
with our
Florence
Nightingales
Sometimes, visitors to St Joseph’s Home tell us they ‘don’t know how we do
this’. By that they usually mean seeing residents at their most helpless and
vulnerable and yet finding the strength to care for them. Our deepest salute
thus goes out to the men and women who dedicate themselves to looking
after our residents day in and day out. Their commitment reminds us of the
‘greatest heroes’ whom the founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale
speaks of; the sort of heroes who ‘do their duty in the daily grind of domestic
affairs whilst the world whirls as a maddening dreidel.’ We chased after a few
of them and sat them down for a precious 45 minutes to hear about why they
chose this profession and how it has changed their lives.
