“How Will I Break The News?”
by Sulad JhunCardiente, SULADS Thailand
T
he Mien people expect their sons to follow in the footsteps of theirfather. It is a traditional
practice of ancestor worship that a son must carry on as dictated by his father. So Kao's father
was understandably upset whenKao asked permission to be baptized. His father told him he
cannot ever be baptized! There was a big argument that night. His father was so afraid that their
big family spirit would harm them if Kao would forsake their traditional way of worship and join the
Adventist church. His father worried that when he died no one will send food offering to him in the
next life.
So Kao decided not to ask permission from his parents. He rescheduled his baptism two times last year
believing that it was not yet the right time. We continued to pray for him.
On the other hand his sister Naai, who was once openly opposed to Kao's decision to follow Jesus,
started reading the Bible, joining in our worship services and in our English camp and medical outreach
work. When she asked her parents’ permission to be baptized, they allowed her. Kao explained that
daughters in the Mien culture were not crucial in ancestral worship because when they get married
they move away and follow their husband anyway.
Our Sulad missionaries did not change: they continued to visit the parents of Kao and Naai helping
them in their farm. They befriended Kao’s younger brother and sister. Their mother continued to be
friendly with them but their father wouldn’t talk to them for a while. But God works in peoples’ hearts.
Kao’s mother accepted the invitation for Bible studies and Kao’s father has now talks to the
missionaries again.
Kao stood up for his new found faith and on January 3, 2015 was baptized. He now faces the challenge of
having to break this news to his family. Meanwhile, his sister Naai is in Australia for six months to study
English. Let us pray for Kao, his sister Naai, and their mother. Let us also pray that the rest of his family
and the people inHuai Fai village will also fall in love with our Loving Savior, Jesus.
