BOGOTÁ UNESCO MUSIC CITY OF Bogotá is the capital city of Colombia with a population of over 9 million people. It is notable as a major Latin American destination and was designated as a UNESCO city of music on the 7th of March 2012 as part of the organization's creative cities network. Bogotá has been a hub for cultural, scienti?c and political movements. Notably amongst its history was its role as the host community where the famous Botanical Expedition started and home for the ?rst astronomical observatory in the Americas. Bogota offers a classic mix of old and new urban settlement each boasting of its unique classic offerings. The cites social vibrancy can be attributed to the presence of multinational organization's and businesses head quartered in Bogota, 106 higher education institutions and a variety of cultural venues including 58 museums, 62 art galleries, 33 library networks, 45 stage theatres, 75 sports and attraction parks, and over 150 national monuments. Many of these are renowned globally such as: The Luis Angel Arango Library, the most important in the region which receives well over 6 million visitors a year; The Colombian National Museum, one of the oldest in the Americas, dating back to 1823;The Ibero-American Theater Festival, largest of its kind in the world, receives 2 million attendees enjoying over 450 performances across theatres and off the street. The Bogotá Philharmonic is the most important symphony orchestra in Colombia, with over 100 musicians and 140 performances a year.
