Despites this cycle of activities embraced by music stardom hopefuls, both from within and outside the country, a yet disturbing phenomenon is left behind in the form of a death of music culture rubbing off on the city of Lagos. Lagos has played host to musicians all over the country from the preindependence days of Nigeria, this may be owing to Lagos status as the capital of Nigeria form the amalgamation of Nigeria till 1986. It is logical to think that musicians converged on Lagos to ?nd patrons who were businessmen, government contractors or those who feed from the corridors of power. A notable feature of Lagosians at the early stages of the Nigerian state till shortly after independence was the penchant for social exuberance, which was accompanied by music. The appetite of Lagosians was satis?ed by largely music of Yoruba and western origin, with the exception of classical music. Music was performed live at all functions and these tricked down across all genres, particularly those of African origin. From Were to Apala, Juju to Fuji, High life to Afrobeats, Lagos enjoyed playing host to these music forms even as they were evolving and writing their own history. There was a robust interaction between these music forms and its audience. The stories of the progenitors of these music forms was witnessed by the dwellers of the fastest growing urban center in the African region at that time. From satisfying social ceremonial functions to religious activities, political activities to business functions in Lagos, there was a place for music and those who subscribed to these forms of music had a culture which was developed as a huge result of this.
